My Story

Trust is hard to come by. Once betrayed, you are marked for life by the pain of an unfortunate past. And sometimes…that mark is real and lasting. Born on his mother’s birthday on a warm Sunday in September, Sun Zulu knows this pain intimately. He carries a scar on his forehead from a painful attack at the age of 3. Because of this traumatic event, the role of an “outcast” chose him at an early age. It was only through the vibrant sounds and culture of Hip Hop that he found an escape. His brother, a DJ, set the stage for Sun growing up – playing songs from the Wu Tang Clan, The Notorious B.I.G. & A Tribe Called Quest in their East Baltimore home. These cosmic soundscapes gave Sun refuge from the world when the pain would overtake him.
After writing a book report on the “Long Walk to Freedom” by Nelson Mandela in the 4th grade, Sun Zulu began to write his own story – finding relief from his peers’ taunts and neglect by adopting the mantra of “beats, rhymes & life”. He would spend his most formative years experimenting with different rhyme styles and identities - searching for the perfect outlet to express the adversities of his life. All seemed well until a vicious attack on his aunt caused Sun to lose faith in humanity and veer off-course.
Sun would spend the next few years in a fog, eventually dropping out of school and running away to Chicago to find his liberation. He would spend the next few years coming to terms with the world and his place in it as a man, eventually leaning to shine through the fog by returning to Baltimore determined to change the world through music. What Sun Zulu offers the world now is a passionate account of redemption detailing how one man, (on his long walk to freedom), found success by conquering his innermost demon of Pain.
